Along the Trail, 25 miles west of Virginia is the city of Hibbing. Hibbing is the largest city on the Iron Range, with a population of nearly 20,000. The major industry is iron ore mining. Near the Mesabi Trail access point is the Hull Rust Mine viewpoint overlooking a three-mile long, man-made mine pit. The Greyhound Bus Museum located in the historic downtown area celebrates the Greyhound Bus Line, which originated in Hibbing. Carey Lake, three miles from town, is the nearest lake and can be reached by car or bike path. Public beaches and a boat launch are available. In 1993, Hibbing celebrated its centennial and erected a fountain on the grounds of the city hall to commemorate the event. Singer Bob Dylan and basketball star Kevin McHale grew up in Hibbing. Tours of the beautiful and historic Hibbing High School take place during the summer months.
Events take place every month of the year in Hibbing. June’s activities feature the Shifters Car Show in North Hibbing, and the Gallery Hop Art Show which is set up in stores and businesses along Howard Street in downtown Hibbing.
July offers the city-wide Mines & Pines Jubilee celebration. Some of the events include a carnival, art festival, flea market, a mile race, parade, sidewalk sales, street dance, mini-plane aerial demonstrations, and fireworks.
