Interactive Map

The Mesabi Trail is a 10 ft wide, paved (asphalt) bicycle trail. Ideal for biking, walking, hiking and running. There are currently almost 150 miles of completed trail, when finished (in just a couple of years) it will stretch almost 165 miles from the Mississippi River (Grand Rapids) to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (Ely).

Portions of the trail are still under construction, especially toward the east end. Check out About the Trail for descriptions of completed and uncompleted sections, and go to Trail Updates & Conditions for current construction progress.

The solid orange line indicates completed trail.
There are two separate sections remaining before the trail is continuous from Grand Rapids to Ely, about 12 miles on the eastern end.
The blue line between McKinley and Biwabik (about five miles) is scheduled for late 2023.
Five of the seven miles south of Tower to Hwy 26 (indicated by a blank space) is scheduled for 2023, with those final two miles in 2024.
