Storm Damage updates as of June 25, 2024:
The Mesabi Trail has several areas of damage from the storm event on June 18, 2024, in addition to the major washout in Giant’s Ridge west of Wynne and Sabin Lakes.
Giant’s Ridge: East of the Narrow’s Bridge, flooding occurred and sinkholes are appearing. Many of the sinkholes are marked, but new ones may appear that haven’t been caught yet. Also, a smaller section of the trail has collapsed but is still passable. Watch your speed while going through this area and remain alert to hazards.
Sparta area: Culvert collapse approximately 0.5 miles west of Hwy 97. This section is closed until we can get a temporary solution in place.
Gilbert: Two large washouts of slopes alongside the trail have occurred. Small portions of the edge of the trail have been affected, but because of how steep the edge is right from the trail and how deep the ravine is, the Rail Authority will be closing this section until further notice. The pictures don’t do the slope washout justice. It is a steep drop out there.
Darwin Myers Wildlife Management Area: Areas of flooding before and after the floating bridge. Watch for potential trail damage due to high water levels, even if the water has receded.
Eveleth to McKinley: Several areas have thick layers of dirt washed over the trail. Be aware of places with loose gravel. Our crews are working diligently to clean up the aftermath of the weather, but it will take some time to get to all the trouble areas.
Despite these challenges, the Mesabi Trail is still largely open and we encourage you to come up for the coolest trail you will ever experience! Wildflowers are blooming, the air is pleasant and warm, and a nice breeze is keeping things comfortable.
The Mesabi Trail™ has been funded in part by the LCCMR and the Minnesota Environmental and Natural Resources Trust Fund.
