Mesabi Trail Conditions 7-9-2024
Near Hwy 97 to Sparta, the sinkholes have been temporarily patched with gravel, so the section is passable for trail users. Please use caution and slow down when crossing the patched areas.
Near Sherwood Forest Campground in Gilbert, the trail is passable. Be aware that the city has placed barriers around the sections of slope collapse and please take care when traversing the area.
Giant’s Ridge area, the trail is closed until further notice. St. Louis County has permitted the use of Giant’s Ridge Road as a detour for the bike trail. We will have signs posted within the next day or two. Please exercise caution when entering and exiting the trail, and normal road rules apply when biking on public roads. The shoulders are wide enough for bikes and will get you to the next connection safely.
East of Wynne Lake, hazards have been marked and our crews have been on that trail section frequently checking for more. This will be an ongoing process of filling the holes with gravel until the settling stops. The trail is open, but again, use caution when traveling through this section.
Finally, the Darwin Myers WMA area flooding has receded and the trail is passable. Use caution if there is any flooding remaining, but definitely get out there and enjoy the area!
One more word of caution: we do have signs stating Trail Damage Ahead on the known locations, but this is a hilly trail with many curves. A lot of the curves end up being blind, so keep a slower speed and stay to the right side of the trail to avoid collisions or loss of control. And call out to other users if you will be passing them.
Come on up and take your tour of the trail and surrounding communities! There is so much to see and do, you will not be disappointed!
